November is Adoption Awareness Month. We’re excited to highlight one of our own team members’ journeys, first as an adoptive parent through our Foster Care program and later as a team member on the Foster Care team.
Today, Megan is a Foster Parent Licensing Coordinator with our Child Placement and Support team in Wilmington, NC. In this position, she works with foster parents to ensure they are able to provide safe, loving homes where children can thrive.
Megan’s passion for adoption began early. By age 12, she knew it was her calling! As an adult, a friend referred her to Easterseals PORT Health’s program and she later adopted her two daughters. Reflecting on this experience, she shares, “One of the most memorable moments of the process was the day of our courthouse ceremony. Surrounded by family, my wife and I officially adopted our girls. We cherish this time watching them grow and seeing who they are becoming. It’s amazing to witness how they’ve progressed as they learn, enjoy reading and form attachments right before our eyes”
Easterseals PORT Health played a crucial role in Megan’s journey, offering consistent and caring support throughout the adoption process. “They went above and beyond to ensure my wife and I were supported, that the girls felt seen and heard and that our family was stable and thriving,” she recalls. After adopting her children, Megan then joined the Easterseals PORT Health Child Placement team as an employee! As a licensed mental health therapist, the role of Licensing Coordinator offered the perfect blend of direct care, behind-the-scenes work while enhancing her passion for supporting families.
Megan hopes National Adoption Awareness Month serves as a reminder that while adoption is beautiful, it can also be challenging and requires a strong support system — one that she found with our Child Placement program.
Easterseals PORT Health (ESPH) is dedicated to the IDEAL principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Authenticity and Learning. As a lesbian woman, Megan values ESPH’s commitment to Inclusion, because she’s been welcomed with open arms as both a mom and a team member when many other organizations might have turned her away.
Thank you Megan for sharing your story and for the important work you do with our Child Placement team. Learn more about our Foster Care Services at eastersealsPORT.com/foster-care.
