The 2026-2027 school year is just around the corner, making it the perfect time to highlight Easterseals PORT Health’s EMPOWER After School program, which offers developmentally appropriate care for students with disabilities. We are excited to showcase the experiences of two participants: Nora and Maxwell.

EMPOWER After School – Nora and Maxwell
Nora has participated in the EMPOWER After School program in Greenville, NC, every year since 2021. “I love making slime and playing on the playground with my friends,” Nora shares. “I feel really good when I come to EMPOWER After School.”
For parents, our After School program provides peace of mind that their kids are having fun and learning new skills in a safe and supportive environment while parents are working, at school or taking a personal day.
“EMPOWER has provided a safe space for our family, allowing us to trust that Nora is looked after by people who care,” her mom says. “I trust that the team understands her needs and gives her special attention. EMPOWER After School is a unique place, filled with compassionate caretakers. We love being a part of this program and would recommend it to any family.”
Maxwell has participated in the EMPOWER After School program in Wilmington, NC, since 2016. “I really enjoy hanging out with my friends and organizing UNO tournaments every afternoon,” Maxwell states. “I also like memorizing my friends’ and teachers’ birthdays. I feel very happy, excited and confident at EMPOWER!”
During a conversation with Landon, EMPOWER Wilmington’s program manager, Maxwell shared a heartfelt aspiration. “When I asked him what he’d like to do once he finishes school,” Landon shared, “he expressed that he would like to become a teacher at EMPOWER. This made my heart so happy!”
