Emily and Brianna
Brianna’s Story

World Cancer Day, observed every February 4, serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact cancer has on individuals, families and loved ones. This year, Easterseals PORT Health is honored to share the story of our team member Emily, a dedicated hospital liaison for the Regional Education Assessment Crisis Services (REACH) program, and her daughter Brianna’s courageous battle with Neuroblastoma.

Emily and Brianna

Brianna’s journey with cancer began just two months before her third birthday, when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma. When she began experiencing random bouts of vomiting, low-grade fevers and severe bruising under her eye, her family and pediatrician hoped for common ailments such as low iron or allergies. However, concerning blood work results led to the discovery of a mass in her abdomen. The devastating diagnosis revealed that the cancer had originated in her adrenal gland and metastasized to her bones and throughout her body. Brianna began treatment and completed multiple rounds of chemotherapy, a surgery to remove the tumor, radiation and immunotherapy. In September 2022, she achieved No Evidence of Disease (NED), bringing hope to her family. However, a relapse in her hip and femur followed months later. Brianna’s fight continued, but despite the best available treatments, the disease progressed. Brianna passed away just days after her fifth birthday.

Throughout Brianna’s battle, the Easterseals PORT Health community and the REACH team provided unwavering support. Emily shared, “My REACH family was there for me from diagnosis through treatment, setbacks, celebrations and ultimately her passing. I have never experienced the genuine care, love and teamwork offered to me.” Whether through granting time off without question or providing emotional support during difficult moments, her colleagues stood by her every step of the way. Brianna was a cherished presence in the office, attending gatherings and forming connections with Emily’s coworkers. This sense of community and understanding helped Emily balance work and caregiving responsibilities during the most challenging times.

Emily is passionate about raising awareness and inspiring hope for others affected by cancer and grief. One of Brianna’s favorite sayings, “No hate; just love,” became a guiding principle throughout their journey. In Brianna’s memory, she continues to advocate for increased funding and awareness for pediatric cancer. Reflecting on Easterseals PORT Health’s IDEAL principles of Inclusive Culture, Different Voices, Embracing Potential, Authentic Self and Learning & Growing, Emily resonates most with Learning & Growing. She values the continuous growth and knowledge she gains from the individuals and families she serves in the REACH program. As Emily continues to honor Brianna’s legacy, she remains dedicated to supporting families affected by cancer, advocating for better treatments and carrying forward the love and strength that Brianna embodied every day.
