On October 6, people around the world recognize World Cerebral Palsy Day. The day raises awareness about cerebral palsy (CP), while celebrating individuals and building understanding. Easterseals PORT Health is an affiliate of United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), whose mission is promote the independence and inclusion of people with cerebral palsy, intellectual, developmental and other disabilities through its network of affiliates and partnerships.
Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in children. It affects how the brain controls movement and muscles. CP can affect balance, coordination, posture and mobility. No two people experience CP the same way. For some, the challenges are mild, while others may need daily support. It’s a lifelong condition, but the effects vary greatly. CP does not worsen over time and with therapy, adaptive equipment and support, individuals can thrive.

We are proud to be an UCP affiliate, share resources and highlight TJ, who attends our EMPOWER Ahoskie, NC program. TJ is a wonderful example of how people with CP are able to thrive. He loves to have fun and is always ready to help out. TJ says the EMPOWER team gives him joy every day. He also shares that cerebral palsy does not limit his mind or his capacity to love. TJ’s energy, positivity and kindness shows that CP is only one part of who he is.
