December 3 marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is a day to celebrate them as the incredible people they are. This year we’re honored to recognize Cynthia and her experience with Easterseals PORT Health’s (ESPH) Alternative Family Living (AFL) program.

Cynthia, AFL host, ESPH board members and leadership team members
Our AFL program matches individuals with developmental disabilities to loving, supportive host families who open their homes and hearts to provide care and support. AFL hosts help with daily living skills, encourage personal independence and create meaningful opportunities for community involvement. However, the AFL program provides more than support. It provides belonging, confidence and connection.
Last month, board members and our executive leadership team met Cynthia (pictured center, wearing a long floral dress) and her AFL host, Shamara (wearing a short floral dress). Together, they shared their story of connection through the AFL program. Cynthia, who has a traumic brain injury, shared how living with her AFL host has transformed her life. “We cook together, go shopping and watch movies together,” Cynthia said with a smile. “She helps me to be independent and has really become my family.” Shamara echoed the same sentiment. “Cynthia has truly touched my life in a positive way,” she shared. “It’s a joy to spend time with her!”
On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we’re proud to celebrate individuals like Cynthia, who thrive with the right support. ESPH’s AFL program provides opportunities for growth and independence for both the individuals and the families that support them. For this reason, we also recognize hosts like Shamara, who have made a life-changing difference by welcoming someone into her home and community.
