Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month highlights the importance of inclusion and support so everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This month and every day, Easterseals PORT Health supports children, adults and families with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). Through participation in our Transition to Employment (TTE) program, individuals gain skills, confidence and access to resources to help them succeed in the workplace.

Emonti and Amber share their experiences and how TTE has helped them grow and thrive at work.

Emonti participates in the TTE program in New Bern, NC. She appreciates how TTE has taught her valuable life skills and how to navigate what to do and what not to do in the workplace. One of her favorite aspects of the program is the opportunity to participate in recreational activities and group outings like Fun Fridays and Terrific Tuesdays. Emonti emphasizes the importance of recognizing National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, stating, “Disabilities are simply different abilities that allow individuals to achieve their goals in their own unique way. I wish more people understood the importance of patience and giving individuals with developmental disabilities the time they need to learn and do things.”

Amber works on the SensABLE Snacks food truck in New Bern, NC and shares how the TTE program is such a supportive and encouraging environment. “The TTE team is always kind and patient. It feels like they genuinely care about each person’s success,” says Amber. Reflecting on the importance of support, Amber says, “Everybody needs help and it’s great learning from people who truly want to help us. Disabilities do not define you, no matter what. With the right support, anyone can achieve their goals.”
