Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is observed every July to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that took place on July 26, 1990. It’s a time to celebrate the contributions, strength and individuality of people with disabilities. It’s our pleasure to introduce you to Lavorois, a dedicated team member who lives in Charlotte, NC.

Lavorois

Celebrating Disability Pride Month is important to Lavorois. At just five years old, he was hit by a truck, resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). He says,

“I am so much more than my TBI and everything I’ve had to overcome. People shouldn’t place limits on those with disabilities. We can do so much more if you give us the chance.”

Lavorois brightens everyone’s day with his warm personality. As a Facilities Assistant, Lavorois helps maintain the office building inside and out. He supports the administrative team by organizing files, pulling documents and assisting with discharge paperwork. He also helps set up conference rooms for events and always welcomes visitors with a friendly attitude.

Phyllis, an Individual + Community Services (ICS) Administrative Assistant, shared a touching moment she shared with Lavorois’ mother, who was delighted to learn about the incredible work her son does. As Phyllis described the full scope of Lavorois’s responsibilities, his mother became emotional and was overwhelmed by all he has achieved.

Outside of work, Lavorois enjoys bowling. He bowls weekly and maintains a strong bowling average of 170-175. He first applied to join the Special Olympics bowling team several years ago but wasn’t selected. However, this year he was finally accepted. For months, he practiced on his own every week. When Lavorois and his teammate competed in the Special Olympics bowling tournament in Raleigh, NC, they won the silver medal, finishing second out of thirty teams!

We are honored to have Lavorois on our team. His hard work and joy are qualities we celebrate for Disability Pride Month and every day.
