Supporting individuals with medication
Psychiatric medication management is vital in treating mental health and substance use disorders. It allows people to achieve better symptom control and enjoy an improved quality of life.
Psychiatric medication management involves prescribing, monitoring and adjusting medications for mental health and substance use disorders. It is a crucial aspect of psychiatric treatment and a collaborative approach between the prescriber (generally a nurse practitioner, physician assistant or psychiatrist), the therapist, the individual and sometimes other healthcare providers. The goal is to optimize the effectiveness of medications, minimize side effects and maintain the individual’s overall well-being.
The process begins with a comprehensive assessment of the individual’s symptoms, medical history and specific needs. Based on the diagnosis and assessment, the prescriber may recommend medications as part of the treatment plan. The selection of medications is tailored to the person and factors in considerations of the specific disorder(s), symptom severity, medical history and the person’s unique response to different medications.
Once the medications are prescribed, ongoing monitoring and follow-up appointments are essential. The prescriber and therapist work together to monitor negative effects and any symptoms the person may have. We also monitor the person’s response to the medication, assess its effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments. The frequency of follow-up appointments vary based on the individual’s needs for optimal symptom management.
