PASS the MindSet!

Last year, Easterseals PORT Health (ESPH) adopted the Mindset Model of intentional engagement and effective conflict resolution throughout our organization. The MindSet Model has been implemented in countless schools, behavioral health care agencies, therapeutic group homes, hospitals and foster care agencies. The approach is fundamentally rooted in four guiding principles:

P – Promote choice and trust (Relationship building 101)

A – Avoid power struggles (Considering how emotional responses are interpreted by others)

S – Seek pro-action vs. re-action (Developing proactive versus emotionally charged responses)

S – Set up everyone for success (Exploring barriers to creating a culture of prevention)

“MindSet closely aligns with our organization’s philosophy of care and culture. It’s intentionally proactive, promotes relationship building with the individuals we support and our team members through choice and trust. I’m very proud of what we’re putting into practice,” says Shanun, ESPH Vice President of Outcomes, who is leading the MindSet implementation. “We’re also leveraging the talents of our team members to deliver the curriculum across our organization. Once trained, it’s incredible to see people sharing personal experiences to demonstrate how the MindSet approach is applicable to everyone from the frontline to supervisors and everyone who’s in a supporting service.”

MindSet is actionable. It requires ongoing practice and implementation every day. It’s more than a checkbox requirement and clearly puts action behind our carefully crafted IDEAL principles (Inclusive, Diverse, Equitable, Authentic and Learning). As an added benefit, this cross-organizational training is connecting team members from different service lines and geographic areas throughout North Carolina and Virginia. Diverse team members from across the organization continually bring new and different perspectives which has made the training even richer.

“I am excited about our organization’s journey! We’re creating a common language that fosters a culture of preventing aggressive behaviors while aiming to set everyone up for success. The response to MindSet training has been overwhelmingly positive and a joy to facilitate! I believe the MindSet guiding principles is helping to pave the way for safe and healthy environments where everyone is thriving,” says Holly, who is a Family Peer Support Supervisor and Lead Family Navigator.

Paula, who is a Program Supervisor with our Outpatient Treatment team, was first trained in Mindset more than five years ago. She says, “I’ve personally seen the power of MindSet in working with different people who have very different needs.”

Josh is a manager with our Tailored Care Management team who also has experience in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “I’ve loved learning the model and then training the MindSet curriculum because of the positive impact it’s had on me and those who participate in the training,” says Josh.

Kudos to our Learning & Organizational Development team for bringing MindSet training to life within our organization. We can’t wait to see what’s next. For now, keep PASSing the MindSet!
