Mental wellness looks at the whole person, including our mind, body, emotions and social interactions. It’s about being able to navigate life’s challenges in a balanced way and it’s something we all need.

Arlene, MSW, LCSWA is an Intake Coordinator for mental and behavioral health services at Easterseals PORT Health in Raleigh, NC. She shares that mental wellness includes “giving yourself the ability to feel your feelings without judgment and being kind to yourself, as you would to others experiencing challenges. Mental wellness is not just about coping, it’s about reflection, self-compassion and taking time to replenish.”

As a busy mom and mental health professional, Arlene knows firsthand the importance of self-care. She finds peace in small daily routines like long walks, reading, working on puzzles, home projects and spending time with her family. “Each day, these mental health snippets give me the ability to create space for others who may need me,” she says.

“Recognizing Mental Wellness Month is particularly meaningful for professionals who support others’ well-being. We are not meant to carry our burdens alone and carrying the burdens of others can weigh heavily on our own mental health,” Arlene explains. “Modeling and practicing mental wellness allows us to best support our clients while encouraging them to prioritize their own mental health without stigma.”

In her role, Arlene provides clients with an empathetic, nonjudgmental ear to help them feel connected and supported. She ensures her clients are linked to the services they need. “When someone says they’ve been referred to me because they knew I could help, it affirms that I’m creating a space where others feel seen and connected,” she says.

“I believe mental health is just as important as physical health. Every person will encounter situations that impact them mentally or emotionally. Having the skills, techniques and support to navigate these challenges is crucial. Seeking help is a sign of bravery, not weakness. Mental wellness matters for our own lives and for the lives of those we support. Taking care of ourselves allows us to be fully present, compassionate and effective for others.
