Nathaniel’s Journey Toward Recovery

September is National Recovery Month and we’re celebrating Nathaniel’s journey of recovery.

September is National Recovery Month graphicNational is a recent graduate of Easterseals PORT Health’s Stepping Stone Manor, a residential program in a home-like atmosphere that creates a safe, comfortable place to help residents in their recovery.

Nathaniel’s journey began in March 2024, when he entered Stepping Stone Manor with more than just substance abuse issues. At just 22 years old, he had already faced a lifetime of challenges. Growing up in the foster care system and group homes, Nathaniel was deprived of the stability, support and guidance that every child deserves. These circumstances led him into a cycle of unhealthy relationships and negative peer influences. In addition to his substance abuse, Nathaniel battled anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other mental health concerns.

When Nathaniel arrived at Stepping Stone Manor, his life was at a crossroads. He was expecting a child, was torn between different relationships and a possible move to New Jersey. Legal issues further complicated his situation, as he was on probation and contemplating just sneaking away. Despite the heavy burden he carried, Nathaniel remained open about his struggles.

Through the patience, guidance and unwavering support of the peer support team at Stepping Stone Manor, Nathaniel gradually began to change his mindset. He embraced the Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP), regularly attended sober support meetings and met most of our program’s expectations. Nathaniel was determined to turn his life around and he started setting realistic goals for himself. His first priority to obtain his GED (General Education Diploma). In the meantime, Nathaniel found a part-time job, saved his money and started working toward financial independence. His hard work paid off when he was able to buy a car!

Nathaniel also started making significant progress in rebuilding his relationship with his family (which included his grandmother, sister and nephew). During regular visits to Whiteville, NC he reconnected with his loved ones and usually returned home with photos and stories that encouraged his newfound optimism and hope. Nathaniel’s ability to manage his anxiety and other life challenges improved and he became more receptive to finding tools and coping strategies to navigate his future.

When Nathaniel left Stepping Stone Manor, he was a better, healthier version of himself. He has moved to be with his grandmother, transferred his job and continues outpatient treatment at our Whiteville, NC clinic. His journey is not just one of personal growth, but also a source of inspiration for those who supported him along the way.

For the team at Stepping Stone Manor, Nathaniel’s success story is a powerful reminder of the profound impact their work has on people. It serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating that with the right support, people who have faced the most difficult challenges can find their way toward a brighter future. Nathaniel will always be a cherished of Stepping Stone Manor’s legacy. He is a living testament to the power of recovery.

Nathaniel’s story is a reminder that recovery is possible and no one has to face it alone. If you or someone you know needs help with substance use treatment, learn more at at eastersealsport.com/substance-use.
