In honor of National Camping Month, we’re shining a light on the incredible experiences made possible through Camp Easterseals Virginia, where individuals of all ages and abilities can explore the great outdoors, make lifelong friends and discover their full potential. From canoeing, soaring on a zipline, splashing in the pool or sharing stories around a campfire, this inclusive environment, supported by trained staff and a community of new friends, ensures that every camper feels encouraged, included and celebrated.
Tajai (pictured) is a camper, whose journey reflects the true spirit of camp. He has attended Camp Easterseals Virginia in New Castle, VA since 2020. His mother, Ramona, shared how much camp has meant to both Tajai and their family. “It’s hard to say what he enjoys most, he loves everything about it,” Ramona says. “The horses, the moose, his counselors, fellow campers and especially painting. When he comes home, he tells the stories behind each painting he created at camp.”
Tajai’s birthday falls in late June, which means he gets to celebrate it during camp. His family usually sends a cake and treats to make the day extra special. The summer of 2024 was especially memorable, as Tajai was able to celebrate both his birthday and the Fourth of July at camp! “They had such a great time decked out in red, white and blue. He came home doing the Macarena and hasn’t stopped since,” Ramona shared.
Camp Easterseals Virginia has had a profound impact on Tajai’s confidence and sense of adventure. “Over the years, he’s become more vocal and outgoing,” Ramona explains. “He’s willing to try new things like rock wall climbing and canoeing, activities that used to intimidate him. We used to live on a lake in New Jersey and had a canoe, but Tajai wouldn’t go near it. Now he’s jumping into lakes, going out into the ocean and enjoying waterslides!”
Ramona encourages other families to consider camp for their loved ones. “It’s important for people with disabilities to have opportunities to explore all that life has to offer. Campers often feel more comfortable surrounded by peers who understand them. We owe it to them to provide these great experiences, watch them blossom while learning new skills and allow them the opportunity to just be themselves.”
