Everyone deserves the chance to find meaningful work and be part of a team. As we recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October, we’re proud to highlight our Transition to Employment (TTE) program, which helps participants build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the workplace.

Kentrell , Elijah, Kara, Raekwon and Jacob
Training begins in the classroom by teaching participants with developmental disabilities to learn communication, teamwork, problem-solving and professional habits. Interactive games like Jeopardy and Bingo make these lessons fun and memorable. From there, participants move into one-on-one training focused on their employment goals with choices in foodservice, buildng maintenance, stocking and organizing. This blend of soft skills and hands-on training helps each individual grow at their own pace.
Kentrell participates in the TTE program and works on the sensABLE Snacks food truck, where he has gained a better understanding of the workplace. He wants employers to know that while learning may take a little more time, people with disabilities are hardworking and determined to succeed.
Elijah diligently practices workplace skills and building his confidence. His strong work ethic and positive attitude stands out to the TTE team and peers alike. Elijah is a proud team member at Sonic Drive-In, where his supervisors praise his reliability and enthusiasm. Elijah is excited to earn his own paycheck, grow in his job and continue gaining independence!
Kara shares that participating in TTE helps improve her communication skills and boosts her confidence in talking with others. She says NDEAM is important because it recognizes that people with disabilities deserve opportunities and support. Kara wants employers to understand that while some tasks may require help, people with disabilities are capable, willing and ready to contribute when given the chance.
Raekwon has learned valuable skills while building friendships through the TTE program. He says TTE has taught him how to participate more and connect with others. Raekwon believes NDEAM is important because it helps people with disabilities find jobs and reminds employers that sometimes just a little help can make all the difference!
Jacob sharpened his employability on the sensABLE Snacks food truck by learning teamwork, customer service skills and handling money. His ability to communicate made a positive impression at his interview with KFC. Jacob was got the job and now he proudly wears his uniform while greeting customers and helping in the kitchen.
Our TTE participants remind us what’s possible when opportunity meets dedication. Their stories are powerful examples of why National Disability Employment Awareness Month matters.
