Easterseals PORT Health (ESPH) believes that everyone should have equal access to employment opportunities.
Every October ESPH joins in the celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which highlights the valuable contributions that individuals with disabilities make in the workplace.
According to the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), as of August 2026, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities stands at 7.8% compared to the 4.2% unemployment rate for those without disabilities. This disparity shows the ongoing barriers that many disabled individuals face when seeking employment.
ESPH’s Transition to Employment (TTE) program is dedicated to increasing the number of people with disabilities in the workforce by offering essential support and resources. Our goal is to empower individuals to pursue successful and fulfilling careers. We have seen firsthand how transformative this can be and are excited to share the stories of just a few of our amazing TTE participants.
“TTE has helped me build my social and customer service skills while working on the sensABLE Snacks food truck, which eventually helped me land a job at Moore’s BBQ! Everyone should have the same opportunity to work. People often focus on disabilities rather than the abilities we contribute. Nothing should stop individuals from doing their best! In fact, sometimes people with disabilities work harder than others.” — Amber, employee at Moore’s BBQ
“TTE helped me find a job that I enjoy! The team is very supportive of my decision-making skills. It is important to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month because everyone has the potential to improve and be helpful. I wish more people would become aware and knowledgeable about individuals with disabilities and strive to be more supportive and resourceful. — Allen, employee at Publix
“Those with disabilities work just as hard as everyone else! My job allows me to earn money, so I can buy the things I need and want. Recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month is important because we deserve to be celebrated, and I enjoy being celebrated.” — Elijah, employee at Sonic
“My involvement with TTE has positively impacted my life because I can make my own money and purchase things now. Individuals with disabilities should also have the opportunity to earn a living. We can work just like those without disabilities, even if we may need some assistance at times.” — Jack, employee at One Community
“Participating in my groups and working with team members at TTE has led to significant self-improvement, to the point where I got a job and I’m close to getting my driver’s permit! I was able to move forward from a dark place in my life and improve mentally, physically and spiritually. Despite my few limitations, my disability does not stop me from learning and growing. Employees with disabilities can make mistakes, especially on their first day, but focus and patience are key. The harder you try, the better your routines become.” — Jacob, employee at KFC
