As we observe Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, this is a reminder of ways to store prescription medications to help prevent accidental overdoses. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were an estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths in 2024. This represents a significant decrease of almost 27% compared to the 110,037 deaths estimated in 2023.
We’re headed in the right direction but there’s always more that can be done. One way to help prevent accidental overdoses is by properly storing and disposing of medications.
- Start by reviewing your prescriptions. Safely dispose of any expired medications.
- Keep all prescriptions in their original container with the safety locks secured.
- Store medications and prescriptions away from the reach of children and pets.
- Lock high-risk prescriptions such as opioids, morphine or codeine in a secure cabinet or medication box.
