Every third week in April, volunteers across the country are recognized during National Volunteer Week. This year, we’re excited to highlight Latrice, one of our amazing volunteers! Latrice began volunteering with Culinary Connections in Virginia Beach, VA in 2024. Culinary Connections is part of Easterseals PORT Health’s Culinary Arts Therapy series that features an immersive teaching kitchen where individuals learn culinary techniques, nutritional literacy, communication and coping skills.
Latrice, Culinary Connections Volunteer
As a volunteer, Latrice has had the opportunity to connect with many people from diverse backgrounds and gain a deeper appreciation for how she can personally and positively impact her community. “Volunteering has broadened my perspectives and helped me grow in so many ways. I’ve developed valuable life skills that enable me to be a positive role model for my family and friends.”
In addition to volunteering for Culinary Connections, Latrice has also leveraged her volunteer network to help people in different ways. “Volunteering allows me to show the world I care and that all people matter! It ignites my passion for helping others and brings me so much joy,” says Latrice. “One of the most meaningful moments as a volunteer came when I was able to rally other volunteers from Culinary Connections to help a single mom in need. As a single parent myself with three kids, I understood her challenges. Working together, our volunteer group was able to give Mom a financial gift in addition to buying Christmas gifts for her and her children. Knowing we made a difference meant the world to us!” Latrice says.
