World Down Syndrome Day, observed every year on March 21, is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the rights and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome. The date, 3/21, symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which defines Down syndrome.
In honor of this important day, we’re highlighting a few of our amazing program participants.

Curren recently joined our EMPOWER Adult Wellness & Recreation program and shared that his favorite part is “meeting new friends.” He’s passionate about his hobbies, including gaming, music and WWE action figures. He loves sharing how amazing these things are with others! Thanks Curren for bringing such vibrant energy and positivity to our community. We’re grateful to have you as part of our EMPOWER family!
Dax has participated in our EMPOWER After School and Summer Camp programs in Wilmington, NC for three years. He loves it and has made incredible strides. He’s become quite the pro at riding the bus and taking turns with others! His mom says, “The team has truly helped Dax navigate social situations. With the right support and inclusion, everyone can shine and share their wonderful gifts with the world. Recognizing World Down Syndrome Day is important because it helps our loved ones be more visible, showcasing the possibilities they can achieve and celebrating their accomplishments.”
Kiara and her mom, Anayanssy, participate in our IDD Family Peer Support Program. Anayanssy shares how Family Peers positively impacts their family’s life. “We don’t have to navigate the confusing system alone. We have the support of our Peer Program Coordinator and other families who have similar lived experiences. Individuals with Down syndrome are some of the most hard-working and dedicated people you will ever meet. They are capable of so much with the proper support system. They want and deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. There is much we can learn from them on how to be better and happier humans!”
